The Best Homemade Pizza Sauce Recipe

Pizza is a regular in my house. It’s one of my favorite foods and obviously my son likes them too. What kid doesn’t?? This pizza sauce will beat any you get from the store and any you’ll have on a chain restaurant pizza. It is easy, robust, a little zesty, and comes together in about 20 minutes with only seven ingredients.

Ingredients for the Best Homemade Pizza Sauce

  • Whole Peeled Tomatoes. I like whole peeled tomatoes because they’re often higher quality than crushed or diced. If I can afford it, I like to order Bianco Dinapoli whole peeled tomatoes. They are so good. At the supermarket, I’ll usually grab Cento San Marzano tomatoes. They work great too.
  • Olive Oil. Olive oil lets us saute our garlic to release its flavor and aroma as well as adds a rich body to the sauce.
  • Garlic. As if this needs explanation. Garlic makes things good.
  • Salt. To lift the flavor of everything.
  • Sugar. I’m a fan of a bit of sweetness in my pizza sauce. The sugar helps balance the acidity of the tomatoes and gets balanced by the salt and the heat from the pepper flakes.
  • Dried Oregano. Bring that classic Italian flavor to the sauce to bring it all together. A little goes a long way.
  • Crushed Red Pepper Flakes. This adds the slightest bit of zestiness to the sauce.

How to Make the Best Homemade Pizza Sauce

Empty the 28 oz can of tomatoes into a large bowl and use your hands to squish the tomatoes down into small pieces. It’ll still be a little chunky, and that’s perfect. Set aside.

Measure your sugar, salt, red pepper flakes, and oregano and set aside.

Measure 20 grams of extra virgin olive oil into a pot over medium to medium-high heat. Use a garlic press to press two cloves of garlic into the pot. Cook, stirring around, until fragrant – about 30 seconds.

Dump your tomatoes, sugar, and spice mixture into the pan, combine, and bring to a simmer.

Simmer for about 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has reduced and thickened nicely, but is still spreadable.

Allow to cool a bit before storing or using on your pizza. Enjoy!

Use a kitchen scale to measure ingredients whenever a recipe provides weights. There is no more accurate way to measure an ingredient with different particle sizes like salt and sugar than weight. Plus, you’re able to just pour/sprinkle many things directly into your bowl without having to dirty up measuring cups or spoons!

Storing Homemade Pizza Sauce

This pizza sauce stores great in an airtight container in the fridge for about a week. It also freezes well for months! Just make sure to let it thaw completely before spreading it on your pizza dough. I’m a huge fan of deli containers for storage.

  • 2 cloves garlic pressed or minced
  • 20 grams olive oil
  • 15 grams sugar
  • 9 grams sea salt
  • 0.4 grams dried oregano
  • 0.3 grams red pepper flakes

Instructions
 

  • Empty the 28 oz whole peeled tomatoes into a large bowl and squish them with your hands to break them up into very small pieces. Something about this process is very satisfying. Believe me. Set aside.
  • Measure your 15 grams sugar, 9 grams sea salt, 0.3 grams red pepper flakes and 0.4 grams dried oregano and set aside.
  • Add your 20 grams olive oil to a large pot over medium heat. Sautee the 2 cloves garlic until fragrant (about 30 seconds).
  • Dump your tomatoes, sugar, salt, oregano, and red pepper flakes in and combine.
  • Bring the pot to a simmer and simmer until reduced and thickened to your liking, about 15-20 minutes, stirring occassionally. Remove from the heat and allow to cool.
